Lateral Thinking Paradigms...

Lateral Thinking is the latest fashionable phrase of what I have been doing most of my adult life and all of my professional life.  I started using the concept of Lateral Thinking as a staff person with a Christian organization on several college campuses,  continuing the application of this  problem solving skill in my work as an estate and financial planner, consulting with non-profit organizations, as the Director of Planned Giving at a major university, and now back coaching and consulting.  Early in my career it was called "thinking outside the box."  And it was early in my career that I coined a phrase that came about as a result of helping someone become successful in achieving their goal when all others had failed to do so.  It may be corny, but it's my corny and it works (see the top graphic on the right).

As a consultant in the 90's I used the "9 dot puzzle" as part of my logo; as a tool to help me explain to people what I did as a consultant for non-profits.  In the 90's the "9 dot puzzle" was a common and fun graphic tool that helped my prospects and clients associate my work with someone who could both get the job done and could do so by being creative.

Always believing there were creative ways to help others and achieve goals, (both theirs and mine) "thinking outside the box," and "lateral thinking" has been a foundational element of my success.  It has been of tremendous help to others as I have been able to help them identify, define, and then creatively come up with ways for them to achieve their success.  This element of lateral thinking is not new; however, the comprehension and then utilization of lateral thinking can and will be forever new as each of us begins an adventure of breaking the bonds of mediocrity and strive for the success we were created to achieve.

Definition from Business Directory
Idea generation and problem solving technique in which new concepts are created by looking at things in novel ways. Whereas the logical ('vertical') thinking carries a chosen idea forward, the sideways ('lateral') thinking provokes fresh ideas or changes the frame of reference. And, while vertical thinking tries to overcome problems by meeting them head-on, lateral thinking tries to bypass them through a radically different approach. The term was coined by the Maltese-born UK psychologist Dr. Edward de Bono in his 1970 book 'Lateral Thinking
Definition from Wikipedia
